Located in the northwestern-most corner of North America, Alaska is the largest state in the United States, even larger than the area of the next three largest states, Texas, California and Montana combined; water comprises 13.8% of the state's mass. Alaska was the 49th state in the Union, admitted on January 3, 1959. The climate of Alaska varies considerably by region. The panhandle is both the wettest and the warmest part of the state, with milder temperatures in the winter and more rain throughout the year. The areas near Anchorage and south central Alaska, tend to get more snow, with clearer weather; this is considered to be a subarctic climate due to short, cool summers. On the other hand, Western Alaska enjoys more moderate temperatures, though rain fall can vary dramatically. The interior of the state is subarctic, with some of the highest and lowest temperatures in the state occurring near Fairbanks. Alaska is most well known for Iditarod sled dog races and the pipeline that originates in the United State's northernmost city, Prudhoe Bay. Also known for its sheer size, measuring about one-fifth the total area of the rest of the country, Alaska's many radar stations protect Americans from a sneak attack over the North Pole. More recently, Alaska has gained notoriety for Sarah Palin, the first Republican woman ever nominated for the United States Vice Presidency.
