Louisiana Public Records
Traditionally considered to be part of the deep south, Louisiana was admitted to the Union on April 30, 1812 as the 18th state. Measuring approximately 51,843 square miles in total area, 15% of this space is water. The state's dimensions are roughly 130 miles in width by 379 miles in length. The capital of Louisiana is Baton Rouge, while the largest city is New Orleans. The dominant ancestry of Louisiana's population are the Cajuns and Creoles, both of French origin. Long, hot, humid summers are characteristic of Louisiana, along with short, mild winters. The climate is largely due to influences from its proximity to the Gulf of Mexico, and rain is typical throughout the year. The state is also prone to tropical cyclones and hurricanes, particularly around the New Orleans area; Hurricane Katrina (2005) is one of the most infamous to occur in recent history. In addition to its notoriety for destructive hurricanes, the state of Louisiana is also known for its Creole and Cajun heritages, and of course for the world famous celebration of Mardi Gras. Tourism and culture go hand and hand in Louisiana, generating billions of dollars in revenue each year for the state.
