The state of Maryland is located in the mid Atlantic region of the United States. As the 7th state to ratify the U.S. Constitution on the 28th of April, 1788, Maryland measures 12,407 square miles in area. Its dimensions are approximately 101 miles by 249 miles in length; 21% of the state's total area is comprised of water. Weather across the state varies due to variances in elevation and proximity to the coast. Eastern Maryland has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and short, mild winters, while western Maryland is considered to be a subtropical highland with mild summers and snowy winters. The state is vulnerable to tropical cyclones, thunderstorms and a limited number of tornadoes. Due to its close proximity to Washington D.C., Maryland is closely associated with government activities and functions. Maryland households are consistently among the wealthiest in the country, while similarly, the state's poverty rate is among the lowest nationwide. The most well known institutions in the state include Johns Hopkins University and the United States Naval Academy.
