By area, the state measures 48,430 square miles or 170 miles in width by 340 miles in length; 3% of the state is comprised of water. The capital and largest city by population in the state is Jackson. This state was named after the Mississippi River. In the state of Mississippi, summers are long while winters are short and mild. In the winter, areas near the Mississippi Sound are significantly warmer than other inland areas of the state. Heavy snowfall is a possibility in this southern state, along with hurricanes originating from the Gulf of Mexico. Tornadoes are also known to occur during the year though they are more likely to land in the northern part of the state earlier in the year and the southern part of the state later in the year.
