Its dimensions are 230 miles in width by 298 miles in length; 1.8% of the state's total area is water. The state offers a continental climate, where temperatures are generally moderate, though there are cases of extreme temperature and rainfall. In fact, Oklahoma is part of Tornado Alley, where severe weather is not uncommon. Oklahoma has one of the highest tornado rates in the country, averaging about 54 per year. Due to these severe weather conditions Oklahoma is home to the Storm Prediction Center, the National Severe Storms Laboratory, and the Warning Decision Training Branch, all part of the National Weather Service. The state is also known for its production of natural gas and agriculture.
