The second largest state by area in the nation, Texas measures 268,581 square miles in total area, or approximately 773 miles in width by 790 miles in length; 2.5% of the state is comprised of water. This state sits prominently in the south central United States on the Mexican border. Texas was admitted to the Union as the 28th state on December 29, 1845. Because of its large size, the weather varies throughout the state. the Panhandle region has colder winters than the northern portion of the state, while the Gulf Coast regions offer mild winters. Snow falls in the Panhandle and mountain areas of west Texas, and also sporadically throughout the state, but only very rarely in the southern part of the state or in the coastal areas. Thunderstorms are a frequent occurrence as are tornadoes; Texas experiences more tornadoes than any other state in the country, most notably in northern Texas and the Panhandle. Texas is most well known for its petrochemicals and energy industries. As a consequence, Texas emits more greenhouse gases than any other state in the country due to its coal power plants and refining and manufacturing industries.
