Utah sits in the western portion of the United States, one of the Four Corner States. With a total area of 84,899 square miles, Utah is the 13th largest state in the U.S. with dimensions of 270 miles wide by 350 miles long; 3.3% of the area is water. Utah was admitted to the Union on January 4, 1896 as the 45th state. The temperature variations within the state are extreme. Temperatures are cold in the winter and hot in the summer. Thunderstorms can occur, usually from about mid-July to mid-September. In the summer, dry lightening can spark wildfires while thunderstorms can lead to flash floods. Utah has rapidly come a hub for information technology and research. In addition, this state is a major tourist destination for outdoor activities including skiing and other winter sports. There is a large population of members from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which has a large influence over community culture.
