Virginia Public Records
Located on the eastern coast of the United States, the state of Virginia is frequently referred to as the Mother of Presidents, following the births of eight U.S. presidents within this state. Virginia measures 42,774 square miles in total area, with dimensions of 200 miles in width by 430 miles in length; 7.4% of total area is water. This state was the 10th state to be admitted to the Union on June 25, 1788. The climate in Virginia is strongly influenced by the Atlantic Ocean, with warmer temperatures in the southern and eastern regions of the state. The coastal areas are subject to hurricanes from the Gulf Stream. Most of these tend to occur near the mouth of Chesapeake Bay. The state of Virginia is most well known for its historical roots. As the birthplace of eight U.S. presidents as well as the home of Jamestown, and the first English settlement, this state holds a special place in U.S. history. In addition, over half of the battles fought in the Civil War took place in Virginia; this state held two of the three Confederate capitals.
