I am working on my family history.  I know my great grandmother's name but think that the last name is probably her step father's, not her original name, so I have not been able to find her on census data.  I also know the date, in 1889, she was born and that she was born in Etowah County, Alabama.  I suspect I could identify her from birth records, school lists, etc from 1889 to the mid to late 1890's.  Before I drive down to Alabama, can you tell me if you do have records of this sort available to the public?  If so, would they be in the county courthouse, a local library or both?   Bill Carver
