Arkansas is located in the southern region of the United States, sharing its borders with six states including Missouri, Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas and Oklahoma. It is the 29th largest state in the United States by area, measuring approximately 239 miles in width and 261 miles in length; slightly more than 2% of total area is water. Arkansas was the 25th state admitted to the Union on June 15, 1836. The climate within Arkansas is generally considered as a humid subtropical climate. With hot, humid summers and cold winters, average rainfall in the state ranges between 40 to 60 inches per year. Snow is more common in the northern half of the state, while ice storms are more typical in the southern half of the state. Extreme weather conditions are not uncommon as sleet, freezing rain, thunderstorms, tornadoes, snow, and ice storms are known to occur in Arkansas. Aquaculture is a fairly large industry in the state. Arkansas ranks third in the nation for catfish farming, as it was the first state to develop commercial catfish farms in the 1950s. In addition, food processing giants J.B. Hunt and Tyson Foods are headquartered in the state along with major retailer Wal-Mart.
