Colorado Public Records

Part of the Western United States, Colorado was named for the Colorado River, and it is one of the 'Four Corners' states. By area, Colorado is ranked eighth in size, measuring approximately 380 miles wide by 280 miles in length. A small 0.4% of the state is comprised of water and total land area is about 104,094 square miles. The capital of the state is Denver, also known as the Mile High City because its official elevation is exactly one mile above sea level. Colorado was admitted to the Union on August 1, 1876 as the 38th state. The climate of Colorado varies considerably throughout the state because of the range of elevations. The geography includes mountains, foothills, plains and desert areas, and therefore the mountains and valleys can considerably affect the climate of local regions. In general, higher elevations experience cooler temperatures and more rainfall. Undoubtedly, Colorado is considered one of the best states in the nation for business, with considerable industry developing in scientific research and high technology. A number of important federal facilities are also located in the state, including NORAD, the United States Air Force Academy, NOAA, and the U.S. Geological Survey.
