How to Conduct a Tax Records Search?

Property tax records are generally available online from a county or state level office. These include:

  • The state/county office frequently named as: assessor, auditor, county clerk, treasurer, real property, etc. These offices retain records related to the value of personal or commercial real property for the purposes of taxation and provide insight as to changes in property value according to market conditions and physical changes to the land or structures on them, and you will need to contact the county or state office in which the subject property resides. In many cases, you can conduct a search of such property records online, though you will need at least some identifying data such as property address or property identification or parcel number. Some counties allow searches based on property owner name, though not all.
  • The Internal Revenue Service (IRS). For income tax records, copies or transcripts of previously filed and processed federal income tax returns are also available to the individual subscriber upon submission of a Form 4506 (for copies of a return) or a Form 4506-T (for transcripts of a return) to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Tax return transcripts may also be ordered online or by phone.
